New York City Shite

I am so over the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and frankly most of those New York art scene post-revisionist-reconstructionist-punk/rock bands can just fuck right off.

Yes there was a time when I liked them, but that time belonged firmly in my mid-twenties when I still had a lot to learn about the opposite and the same sex.

I still have a lot to learn about the opposite and the same sex, but what I certainly do know now is that these bands are essentially just stylised shite dressed up in an aesthetic that somehow got absorbed into the zeitgeist.

It seems like a handful of people tuned their guitars differently, affected a pose and a snarl, and suddenly we had this whole 'art noise' genre that was intoxicating at first, and therefore perhaps important in its own way, but frankly those CDs should now be dusty or grouped together in a place that shows some of the shame that hovers over your past like the droning fuzz of a New York City concept.

I still love 'Turn Into'. However, one good song does not make a great band.

On a related note: The Gossip are the new Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Discuss.

Yep, absolutely agree.

That tired sort of 'in your face' attitude and 'disregard' for convention that is actually driven by careful market positioning.

And that mouthiness. It's just been DONE. Bad enough when we have to listen to Kim Gordon saying things like "fuck her, she's such a bitch" or whatever she goes on about in her Sonic Youth tirades -- shut up! -- the last thing we need is a new generation of this.

Having said that, I saw The Gossip live in 2007 and it was actually a pretty memorable show. Mostly for the repulsion factor though, I think.

I think it's a sign of getting old that makes me tire of singers who are media personalities (Beth Ditto).

I much prefer those who just shut up and sing. Or play or what have you.

The Gossip are pop as far as I'm concerned, whether they like it or not. Don't think it's a favourable comparison if you're the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

If it were not for the obese/dykey factor The Gossip wouldn't rate a mention in most indie press.
