Old Records Off the Shelf

Thankyou to the lovely Marc and the ever delightful Pete for contribution rights to the world of the Embarrassing LPs.

Sadly, they are really going to find out the true meaning of those two words now that I'm here.

You see, being Mrs Old, I had the misfortune of my formative teenage years (when one's true taste in music is developed, naturally - none of this playing Bach in the womb business, it's all about puberty) being smack bang in the 80s. Which means a) a fake drum beat will always sound good to me b) hair must always be vertical.

Anyway, nobody's mentioned anything about the Rolling Stones, The Who or Pink Floyd (have they?)

Retro cool? or Old Time Rock 'n' Roll Nobody Takes Those Drugs Anymore, So Who Cares?

my comment would be that the who has no place in a collection, and i don't really want to see the rolling stones unless the potential partner is japanese.

is ethnicity an escape clause? hmm, a can of worms there i do think...

as for pink floyd, i recognise this as a contentious issue. for me, i am happy to see animals and a momentary lapse of reason.

i DO NOT want to see dark side of the moon and much less do i want to see a t-shirt of the said album.

i can dig a led zeppelin t-shirt if it has sequins and the wearer is japanese and preferably androgynous. vintage recycle is ok too. never pink floyd though.

but i digress.

no excuse under the sun exists for possession of the pulse album, even if one was attracted by the flashing LED on the package.

but what do i know? i always thought pink floyd were german.

Baby, baby, bay-beh!

You turn your back for a minute and somebody accepts your Blogger invite and someone else says:

is ethnicity an escape clause? No, but I know what you mean, Pete. Growing up in Japanese culture does give excuses for ownership of certain items because of the "subcultural" element certain artists may have.

The Rolling Stones are a welcome addition in anybody's collection as long as the album is pre-1990s. Yes, I've said it: the Stones released some good stuff in the 1980s, including Tattoo You but Emotional Rescue is a bit patchy.

The Beatles I was thinking about the other night. I don't want to see "Red", "Blue" and all three Anthology CDs. Nor do I want to see too many solo projects, and yes that does bloody include The Plastic Ono Band.

Led Zeppelin are allowed every album to be present seeing as they are often mid-priced and their back catalogue is not huge.

Pink Floyd is another story. Pete has managed to pick out my most utterly fucking detestable Floyd albums. Momentary Lapse... is post-Roger Waters leaving, thus immediately disqualifying its very existence. I would be happy to see:

Piper At The Gates of Dawn (1967), any three albums with Gilmour and Waters together but before Dark Side Of The Moon (1972), especially Atom Heart Mother which while being pseudo-classical (ugh!) sounds quite lovely. I could live with someone owning Dark Side Of The Moon, Wish You Were Here and mayb e I could put up with The Wall (1977) at a push. But definitely nothing post The Wall and no solo projects other than those of Syd Barrett.

The Who reek of piss. Nothing allowed. I have tried and see no logic in liking The Who.

I think I will say it. Fashion (and this means garments) are not to be discussed here, though I will mention that bad fashion usually (though not always) goes with a bad record collection and vice-versa.
